Elis Monsport | Authorial Glass Partitions
Glass designer and engraver Eliška Monsportová, working under the brand Elis Monsport, is one of the few practitioners in her field who routinely works at a large scale. For interiors, she designs bespoke glass partitions made of kiln-formed and engraved glass with striking reliefs. The work of Elis Monsport regularly resonates at international festivals; she has exhibited at Collectible Design Fair in New York and Brussels, as well as at Design Fair in London. Her approach to glass in architecture is bold and innovative.
– What can your brand offer architects?
Almost everything they could wish for in the field of glass. I design and produce bespoke mirrors, chandeliers and light objects, as well as artistically crafted glass partitions that can be engraved or kiln-formed. Such glass can function as a window, a skylight, or even as a fire-rated window.
– Which product should every architect be familiar with?
Definitely kiln-formed glass partitions and shower screens, as well as engraved windows that bring character, light, and texture into a space.
– Which realization best represents your work and makes you most proud?
Certainly the work for Taro restaurant, where I created wall lights, or the large-format glass wall in Vratimov. However, most of my projects are realized in private residences—from bespoke mirrors to engraved skylights or shower screens. I collaborate, for example, with Plus One Architects or Denisa Strmisková Studio. Recently, installations for hotels around the world have also been increasing.
– How would you define your position on the market, and what makes your work distinctive?
I offer a boutique approach that is personal, professional, and based on partnership. I am neither mass production nor a large-scale manufactory. I focus on projects that large companies often refuse or approach impersonally. Each piece is unique or produced in very small numbers. That is my strength.
– Do you collaborate with architects on bespoke production?
Yes. Shape, colour, and material can all be adapted—custom work is a key part of my practice.
– Favourite architectural studios?
Claesson Koivisto Rune, Teruhiro Yanagihara, and Plus One Architects.
– What is currently your bestseller?
Kiln-formed shower screens.
– Do you prefer smaller, more intimate commissions or large projects?
I enjoy smaller, more intimate realizations, but I am also happy to take on a single larger challenge.
– Is there any limit you would currently like to overcome?
Financing on the part of developers—this is an area where I see room for change.
– Which architect would you most like to approach for collaboration?
Eron Koivisto, without a doubt.
– How do you integrate sustainability into your work?
Sustainability stems from my overall approach: I work in small series, with high-quality and durable materials, without mass production or short-term trends. As a result, each product has a long lifespan, and in essence, every one of them is key.
– Where would you place yourself in an international context?
I am an artist, craftswoman, and designer who enjoys addressing complex challenges from concept through to realization. Abroad, my ability to maintain a strong authorial signature while also accommodating the investor and finding solutions that satisfy all parties is particularly appreciated.
